The Phillies 4-2 win over Atlanta on Monday showed me that this team isn’t going to just roll over the final three games of the season and let the Braves walk into the playoffs. I actually think Philadelphia would prefer that the Braves don’t make it. They figure to have a great shot at winning game 2 of the series with Roy Oswalt on the mound against Derek Lowe. Oswalt has dominated the Braves since joining the Phillies, he is 1-0 with a 1.71 ERA in four starts with three of those starts resulting in Phillies wins. Lowe has not had much success of late against Philadelphia, allowing 9 ER on 18 hits over 11 innings in his last two starts. Lowe is also 0-3 with a 7.98 ERA and 1.978 WHIP in his last three starts. They are also five back to the Rangers, and this is clearly a must-win situation for them. We like their chances with Ace Dan Haren on the mound. Haren is 15-9 with a 3.24 ERA and 1.026 WHIP in 32 starts this season. He’ll be up against Dustin McGowan, who has struggled mightily in limited action for the Blue Jays. McGowan sports a 7.50 ERA and 1.750 WHIP in 12 innings pitched in 2011, giving up 10 runs, 11 hits and 10 walks. The Angels are 10-2 in their last 12 games as a favorite of -151 to -200. The Atlanta Braves seem to be falling apart at a less than opportune time. The Braves, who seemed to have the NL wild card all but secured with an 8 1/2-game lead Sept. 4, sit just 2 1/2 ahead of St. Louis following another disappointing defeat. Atlanta suffered its seventh loss in 10 games Monday, falling 6-5 as closer Craig Kimbrel surrendered a two-run, walk off homer to Omar Infante with two outs in the ninth. The Braves have dropped 10 of 12 on the road – including a season worst-tying four straight. After matching a career high with 11 strikeouts en route to throwing a one-hitter during a 3-0 victory at Pittsburgh on Sept. 10, Anibal Sanchez yielded two runs and four hits in six innings of a 3-1 loss at MLB-leading Philadelphia on Thursday. Sanchez is 2-2 with a 2.25 ERA in his last six starts, limiting opponents to a .199 average. The Marlins are 26-12 in Sanchez’s last 38 starts as a home favorite. I’m recommending a play on the Cubs on Friday. The Chicago Cubs have won six of Matt Garza’s last eight starts and the righty has pitched quite well. He’s allowed just 14 earned runs in those eight outings, to go along with 53 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings. That’s a smoking, 2.46 ERA with a 9.30 Ks/9 IP mark. Garza owns a sub-3.00 ERA in 12 daytime starts this season and he’s had little trouble with the Houston Astros in three outings. But despite posting strong numbers against Houston, he’s yet to pick up a win against them. I believe he’ll do so today against an Astro team that’s won just 17 of their last 59 road games. Houston is also on a 12-26 slide when Wandy Rodriguez toes the road rubber. The lefty is 0-2 against the North Siders this season with an ERA above 5.00. And he’s not been nearly as effective in daytime action as he has been when the sun goes down. The Cubs are on a 5-1 run against starting pitchers with a WHIP above 1.30 and I expect another win, behind Garza, in this one. I’m laying the price with Chicago on Friday afternoon. Thanks! GL! On Friday the Free play is on the San Diego Padres. Game 914 at 10:05 eastern. The Padres fIt a solid 19-1 system that plays on home teams that are off a road loss and had 4 or less hits and no more than 1 error, vs an opponent off a road dog loss and scored 2 or less runs , also with 1 or less error. We don’t play games based just on a system. Arizona does have some angles on their side in this one. However the system is strong enough to at the very least make the Padres a free play. The Pitching also favors the Padres as they have Stauffer going tonight. Stauffer has a fine 2.76 home era and went 6+ shut out innings in his only home start vs Arizona. Miley makes the start for Arizona and he has a 4.80 era over his last 3 start and allowed 5 runs in 5 innings vs San Diego earlier in the season. The Padres have a better home bullpen era than Arizona has on the road as well. SO we will back the Padres. On Friday I have the 15-1 College Football Power System Side and the AL Game of the Month from a 90% Power System and out ream has Several strong angles backing them. I really like the Rockies to take down the Giants in the series opener tonight. The Rockies have won three of four and are in great shape to put an end to the Giants four game winning streak. Colorado is 14-9 at home against the Giants over the last three seasons and I believe they have a clear edge on the mound. The Rockies will start Jhoulys Chacin against Ryan Vogelsong. Both starters have pitched effectively this season and against the opposing team. However, this will be Vogelsong’s first start at Colorado. He has clearly been a better home pitcher this season. He has a 2.74 ERA on the season, but a 3.36 ERA on the road. He is also 0-3 with a 3.54 ERA in his last three starts. Chacin is 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA in four career starts against the Giants. Colorado is 7-1 in their last 8 home games vs. a team with a losing road record, 6-1 in their last 7 home games vs. a right-handed starter, and 4-1 in Chacin’s last 5 starts vs. National League West. For starters, Adrian Gonzalez is questionable and David Ortiz is doubtful for this game tonight as of this writing. Tampa Bay has won 5 of their last 7 games overall. Boston has lost 6 of their last 7 games overall. Jeremy Hellickson has been solid all year. Hellickson is 12-10 with a 2.96 ERA overall this year, 6-5 with a 3.62 ERA on the road this season and has a 2.57 ERA his last 3 starts. Kyle Weiland is 0-1 with a 6.76 in games this year, 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in all starts and has a 13.50 ERA at home this season. Tampa Bay is 4-1 at Boston this year. Anibal Sanchez has quietly put together a brilliant stretch, with a 0.86 ERA his last three starts fanning 21 in 21 innings. Sanchez tossed nine scoreless innings and was the winning pitcher Saturday against the Pirates. He allowed just one hit while walking three and striking out 11. Sanchez has not allowed an earned run over his last two starts (15 innings) and has 16 strikeouts over those starts. The win brings his record to 8-7 on the season to accompany a 3.64 ERA, 184 strikeouts and 56 walks. A great spot for the big dog with a red-hot, under the radar starter. I feel that we’re getting solid value with the home underdog Pirates here. Lincoln is 1-2 his last three starts. However, he’s got a stellar 2.50 ERA over those three starts, averaging six complete innings. On the other hand, Lohse is 2-1 but has an ugly 6.43 ERA his last three starts, averaging less than five innings in those games. Lohse is 2-1 with a solid 3.75 ERA vs. the Pirates this season. However, Lincoln is 1-0 with a superb 1.13 ERA in two starts vs. the Cards this season. While they’re below .500, the Pirates have had a somewhat respectable season.
