NCAAB Pick: Northern Iowa +10.5
Free Play from Doc’s Sports. #587 Take Northern Iowa over Wichita State (8 p.m., Wednesday) I don’t think you can quantify the effect Northern Iowa’s buzzer-beating win over Creighton last time out can have on them going forward. Plus, each of the last three times Wichita State has been a heavy favorite, they have not come through with the cover. I am also considering the fact that UNI have not been bigger than a five-point favorite in any Missouri Valley game so far this season. Four of the their last five losses in league play have been by single digits, and here I think they can give Wichita a game. They lost by just three in the first meeting, and I see a similar result in this one as well. -Doc’s Sports

NBA Pick: Atlanta Hawks -3
The Atlanta Hawks will be more motivated for a win tonight than at any other point of the season. They are in the midst of their first 3-game losing streak of the season. There’s no question this team wants to put an end to it tonight. Atlanta is showing some of their best value of the season due to this 3-game skid. As only a 3-point favorite over the Indiana Pacers, I’m certainly willing to pull the trigger. Atlanta is still 16-9 on the season, including 8-4 at home where they are outscoring opponents by 5.4 points/game. The home team is 4-0 SU & 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings. Atlanta has really had Indiana’s number as well, winning nine of the last 11 meetings. The favorite is an impressive 16-5 ATS in the last 21 meetings. Atlanta is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home meetings with Indiana. This play falls into a system that is 76-35 (68.5%) ATS since 1996. It tells us to bet on home teams where the line is +3 to -3 (ATLANTA) – off a upset loss as a favorite, a good team (60% to 75%) playing a team with a winning record. Bet the Hawks Wednesday. -Jack Jones

NBA Pick: Dallas Mavericks +1.5
Dallas and Denver will be motivated as both enter off three consecutive defeats, but I believe the Mavericks will want this game just a little bit more. The reigning NBA champs were embarrassed with a 22-point loss in the season’s first meeting. That defeat will be the driving force behind a win tonight. Plus, the Mavs, who have had a full 3 days to prepare, enter this contest with a healthier roster. Depth was the Nuggets’ strength early on but that depth has been greatly depleted with Arron Afflalo, Rudy Fernandez, Nene, Timofey Mozgov, Corey Brewer and Danilo Gallinari all banged up. Afflalo and Fernandez should be on the floor tonight, but Nene’s status is still up in the air and it looks like Mozgov and Brewer will be out. The biggest loss is Gallinari – the team’s leading scorer – who is out indefinitely with a serious ankle injury. The Mavericks are 13-3-1 ATS in their last 17 games as an underdog, and the underdog is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings in this series. The Nuggets are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games as a favorite and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games as a home favorite. We’ll take the Mavs. -Jimmy Boyd

Pick: Detroit -2.5
I’m playing the Pistons on Saturday night. The Pacers are attempting to hold off Milwaukee and Charlotte for the final spot in the Eastern Conference standings, but it certainly doesn’t help getting blasted at home by the Sacramento Kings. But that’s exactly what happened last night. And now Indiana finds itself in a horrible team situation, playing in their second of back-to-back nights. The Pacers are 2-12 ATS when the second game is a road contest. They’re also on a 3-11 ATS slide on the road when playing their third game in four nights, which is also the case in this one. The Pistons also played last night, but they’re actually 3-2 SU when playing at home the night after a road contest. Detroit came up short last night in Cleveland, but they have played a better brand of basketball since center Greg Monroe was inserted into the starting lineup. Monroe and Tayshaun Prince make for a decent front line duo that I believe Indiana will struggle with tonight. Look for Detroit to grab the win and cover. I’m playing the Pistons. Thanks! GL! Scott Spreitzer

Pick: Atlanta Hawks -9.5
Motivated by back-to-back defeats, and with 2 full days to gear up, expect the Hawks to take it to a Nets squad that has lost 5 of its last 6 and is playing without a day of rest. The Hawks will draw added motivation from a loss at New Jersey the last time these teams faced off. The fact that this game is being played in Atlanta certainly bodes well for the Hawks. Consider that Atlanta has won 4 straight at home in this series with those wins coming by an average of 21.3 points. The Nets are 6-20 ATS in their last 26 games as a road underdog of 5.0-10.5 and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games as an underdog of 5.0-10.5 points overall. The Nets are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games when playing without a day of rest and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games when their starting 5 players combine for more than 160 minutes the previous day. The home team is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings and the Hawks are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games against the Nets. Lay the points. -Jimmy Boyd

Pick: Bulls vs. BUcks Over 177.5
The last 4 meetings in this series have been very low scoring, but I believe odds makers have set the bar a little low here considering both of these teams played last night. When the legs are tired, defense is the first thing to go. These are 2 of the best defensive teams in the league, but I don’t expect the clamps to be quite as tight with fatigued legs. Besides, both teams have found their stride offensively. The Bucks and Bulls have both hit the century mark in 3 of their last 4. The Over is 4-1 in the Bucks’ last 5 games playing on 0 days rest. The Over is also 16-7-2 in the Bucks’ last 25 games when their starting 5 players combine for more than 160 minutes the previous day. Bet the Over. -Jeff Alexander (Handicapperspicks.com)

Pick: Atlanta Hawks +6
The Atlanta Hawks are back on track with two straight quality road wins over Golden State (95-79) and Portland (90-83). They have really clamped down on the defensive end and will do so again tonight against a Denver team that is without Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups, making points hard to come by for the Nuggets. Atlanta is 14-5 ATS in their last 19 meetings with the Nuggets, including 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings in Denver. The Nuggets have surprisingly played well after their trade with the Knicks, but that won’t last and they are certainly overvalued because of the way they have played since the trade. Denver is 1-11 ATS (-11.1 Units) in home games versus teams who attempt 18 or more 3 point shots/game – 2nd half of the season over the last 2 seasons. The Nuggets are 15-31-6 ATS in their last 52 games following a ATS win. Denver is 0-11 ATS (-12.1 Units) after a close loss by 3 points or less over the last 2 seasons. The Hawks are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games playing on 0 days rest. Atlanta is a perfect 9-0 ATS (+9.0 Units) after 2 consecutive non-conference games this season. Take the Hawks and the points. -Black Widow

Pick: Suns vs. Nets Under 206.5
Plays Under on road teams (PHOENIX) when the total is greater than or equal to 200, provided they are coming off a road win in which they scored 110 or more points and are playing 4 or less games in 10 days, are 30-8 the last 5 seasons. We are only seeing an average of 199.3 total points scored in this situation. Last month, New Jersey gave up 118 points in a loss at Phoenix. This is key because the Nets are an impressive 15-5 Under in home games when out to avenge a loss in which it allowed an opponent to score 110 points or more the last 3 seasons. We are only seeing an average of 196.6 total points scored in this situation. Bet the Under. -Jeff Alexander (Handicapperspicks.com)

Prediction: New York Knicks -6.5
Doc’s COMP Pick: Wednesday February 23nd 2011-Take #712 New York -7 over Milwaukee (7:35pm est): Perfect spot for the New York Knicks to debut their new look team tonight. They are well rested and get a Milwaukee Bucks team that is coming off a ugly win last night. New York has been looking for a spark and that should come tonight with Carmelo Anthony joining the team. The Knicks come in having covered five straight against the Eastern Conference. They have had no problems beating up the lesser teams all season as they are currently 12-4 ATS when facing a team with a win pct. below .400 on the year. New York has been inconsistent all season but have somehow managed to cover 66% of their last 44 games overall, which comes as surprise to most and proves the Knicks are an underrated team. Milwaukee has struggled to get anything going this season having only covered three of their last ten games following a win. They are just 2-5 against the number when facing a team with a winning home record. Head coach Scott Skiles has always got his Bucks teams to fight in the past but that hasn’t been the case as much of late as Milwaukee has lost ten of their last eleven games by six points or more and in those eleven games the Bucks have lost by an average of nine points per defeat. Lastly keep in mind the Knicks were badly embarrassed back at the beginning of the year against the Bucks, losing by 27 points in their only contest between the two teams so far this season. If there were ever a game the Knicks want to pour it on it will be this one, not so much because of the earlier season loss (though that fact doesn’t hurt) but more or less to make a statement to the rest of the NBA tonight. Play New York to win and cover this one.

Prediction: Atlanta Hawks +3
The high hopes of the Phoenix Suns have been dashed by their tenth position in the West heading into the break. The Suns have dropped four of their last five contests against the number when playing at US Airways Arena. These two met back in November and the Suns handed the Hawks their first loss of the season shooting 57 percent from the field in Atlanta. Hawks guard Joe Johnson scorched them for thirty-four in the loss and teammate center Al Horford dropped thirty on the Suns defense that day. Atlanta had matchup issues in that game that they do not have tonight and this should be a much different outcome as we expect the Hawks to give the Suns all they can handle and shock them in the desert with a road victory. Atlanta coming off an ATS loss as an underdog in their last two games has bounced back with a record of 17-7 ATS with games in this price range. If they are an underdog, their record improves to 11-3 ATS and if they are on the non-conference road, they are a perfect 6-0 against the number. The Phoenix Suns coming off two home games and now a home favorite in this price range are just 4-13-1 ATS. If they went over as a home underdog in their last game and now a favorite they are a miserable 0-6-1 ATS in that situation. A check of our systems database revealed three powerful league-wide winners that are active for tonight’s game. Play AGAINST NBA home teams after losing and going over as a home underdog in their last game, these teams are 92-136-8 ATS. If they are installed as a home favorite in this situation, they are 37-70-2 ATS. If they lost as a home underdog in their last game and now installed as a home favorite in this price range they are only 26-47-1 ATS. Take the points with the Hawks as they shock the Suns and get a road victory on Wednesday night in the desert. -Robbie Gainous (Handicapperspicks.com)

NBA Predictions for February 14th 2011: Wager On The Hawks And Trailblazers

Prediction: Hawks vs. Pistons Under 185.5
Atlanta is struggling from the floor and they need some offense, but their defense is very solid. Detroit is playing better defense, but Rip Hamilton still out and this should be a tight and competitive game tonight. Atlanta has went UNDER 6 out of the last 7 games and though Harrington is back, they will struggle here tonight against a feisty Pistons team looking fro a win. I like the Under here. -Tony George

Prediction: Portland Trailblazers -2.5
Minnesota is 13-41 straight up this year. The Timberwolves are 4-10 ATS their last 14 games overall and they are 3-11 ATS their last 14 games as underdogs. Minnesota 7-18-1 ATS their last 26 games as home underdogs. The Timberwolves are 3-8 ATS their last 11 home games. Portland is 30-24 straight up this year. The Blazers are 18-7-1 ATS their last 26 games as road favorites of 0.5 to 4.5 points. Portland is 4-1 ATS after scoring 100 or more points in their last games. The Blazers are 4-1 ATS their last 5 Monday games and they are 5-2-1 ATS their last 8 games as favorites. PLAY ON PORTLAND -Tom Freese

Prediction: Atlanta Hawks -4.5
If back-to-back home defeats aren’t enough to get Atlanta’s blood boiling, recalling a 103-80 loss the last time it visited Detroit will certainly do the trick. Right away, I like the fact that road favorites out to avenge an upset loss to an opponent, provided they are also coming off an upset loss at home, are an impressive 79-39 ATS since 1996. In addition, plays against home teams that are extremely tired – playing their 5th game in 7 days – and provided they are a poor team winning only 25% to 40% of their games on the season, are 116-66 ATS since 1996, including 5-1 ATS this season. The Pistons are coming off an exhausting defeat to Portland Sunday. The Hawks, meanwhile, have had a day to rest, and they have only played 2 games in the last 6 days. I’ll back the fresher, more talented Hawks in this motivated spot. Lay the points. -Jimmy Boyd (Handicapperspicks.com)

Prediction: Spurs vs. Nets Under 190.5
One of the worst offenses in the league meets one of the best defenses in the league Monday when the New Jersey Nets host the San Antonio Spurs. New Jersey is scoring a woeful 92.8 PPG this season, while the Spurs give up 96.3 PPG. The Nets are playing solid defense this year, though, as they allow just 96.8 PPG at home. Taking a look at recent meetings in this series, it’s easy to see that there is some value with this UNDER tonight. The UNDER is 17-6 in the last 23 meetings. In fact, the Spurs and Nets have combined to score 190 or less points in 21 of those 23 meetings. The UNDER is 9-2 in Spurs last 11 games playing on 1 days rest. The UNDER is 6-1 in Spurs last 7 vs. a team with a losing S.U. record. The Nets are 6-1 to the UNDER in their last 7 vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. Roll with the UNDER in this game Monday. -Jack Jones
