Pick: Texas -18
You wonder at this point how much motivation Iowa State has. One of the best players is still out with a high ankle sprain in Jamie Vanderbeken. The Cyclones are very thin on the bench as they lost 5 scholarship players to suspension for grades. They are a short a great scorer here, they have lost 9 in a row and suffered a home defeat by Missouri which had not won a road game yet this season by 6 points on Saturday. Texas is off one of the biggest upsets of the past month in college basketball at the hands of a feisty Nebraska team on Saturday in Lincoln. Texas’s main rival in the Big 12 Kansas just dropped a bomb on Okie State last night on ESPN, and I expect Rick Barnes to have the Longhorns fired up for this one, and I feel bad for Iowa State in this one, because if Texas wants to name the score, they can! Iowa State is 2-7 on the road this year and giving up 75 ppg on defense on the road, against a very strong home team that will be motivated, and a home team that allows just 58 ppg at home, against a team who is shooting just 39% from the floor on the road, and in their last 5 games has allowed 83 ppg and 50% from the floor.

Pick: Tennessee +6.5
At 9 pm, our complimentary selection is on the Tennessee Volunteers plus the points over Vanderbilt, as Tennessee falls into a 19-2 ATS team situation tonight. What we want to do is play on the Volunteers as a road underdog of more than 1 point, if they’re off a SU home loss to a conference foe. Pick: Utah -7.5
TCU hits the road for a meeting against Utah on Tuesday night in hopes of breaking their current losing streak to the Utes, which stands at 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS the last three seasons. This will be a tall order for a very weak Horned Frogs unit. Even though Utah has been up and down this season, they were able to defeat New Mexico over the weekend at the Pit and they took care of this Frogs team in Fort Worth back in January when TCU still had their leading scorer guard Ronnie Moss who was suspended in late January. The Frogs have lost their last ten games straight up and seven of eight against the number. TCU is 4-11 ATS as an underdog, 3-10 ATS versus conference teams and 3-8 ATS coming off a loss versus a conference rival. Utah has proven to be a solid investment going 24-11 ATS overall their last 35 games and 3-1 as a home favorite in this price range. Great matchup tonight. No. 19 Utah (10-2) vs No. 11 Boise State (11-1). I contemplated making this a premium pick as I feel just a bit stronger about this play than the average 5*. A few reasons this one goes under the total. The Utes can play some solid D. Last game out they edged BYU 17-16. They allow less than 20ppg on average. Speaking of D’s. The Broncos aren’t to shabby either. They are 4th in the nation in both scoring defense (13.6 points per game) and total defense (259.3). Boise State was sixth against the run (103.5 yards per game). The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Boise State’s last 5 games. Boise State beat Utah 36-3 when these teams last met in September 2006, and I’m looking for something similar in terms of offensive output in this one. (Handicapperspicks.com)

Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Utah Utes

NCAA Football Odds: Pittsburgh Panthers (+3) -110 vs. Utah Utes (+3) -110: Over/Under 49.5

The Panthers have two critical things going for them in this game. The first is that they clearly have one of the, if not the best running backs in the game in Dion Lewis. He rushed for 1,799 yards last year as just a freshman, and there is no reason to believe that he will be slowed down in the opener either.

The second item of note for U-Pitt is the fact that it always seems to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks with just the use of its front four. Blitzing isn’t really in the cards most of the time for Dave Wannstedt, but in the event that he does call for the heat, it is unlikely that most quarterbacks will find the time to make the throws to beat the ‘D’.

On the other side of the ball, it isn’t going to help the Utes any that their quarterback, Jordan Wynn is just a sophomore and has still yet to reach double digits in terms of games played at this level. Wynn did come on strong against the California Golden Bears in Utah’s bowl game last year, going 26-of-36 for 338 yards with three TDs, but he was sacked a handful of times and couldn’t get away from the pass rush when it came.

Wynn is going to need a lot of help from his defense in this game to contain Lewis and the Panthers. This is a unit which ranked in the Top 25 last year in total defense (313.8 yards per game), pass defense (176.2 yards per game), and scoring (20.2 points per game). The better news is that Pittsburgh might be a one dimensional team, as it is breaking in a new quarterback in Tino Sunseri, who replaces a veteran of the team, Bill Stull.

NCAA Football Insider Tip: The Utes are generally slow starters, at least in terms of the spread, as they are just 1-4 ATS in their L/5 games played in the month of September.

Though this is a tough game to call, the Panthers are our choice. The defensive front and the consistency of the rushing game with Lewis will be too much to handle. Our football expert line choice is on U-Pitt in this college football betting battle.
